Senior Exploration Geologist

OceanaGold is seeking a dynamic and innovative Senior Geologist with 7-15 years of gold exploration experience.  The position will drive exploration programs at and/or around the Haile gold mine in South Carolina. This is a residential position at the largest gold mine in the eastern USA. Haile is an expanding open pit operation and will develop underground mining in 2022. It’s an exciting time to join the Haile team.

Key tasks and responsibilities include the following:

The primary role of the Senior Exploration Geologist is to lead exploration programs at Haile and in the Carolinas. The goal is the discovery of economically viable gold deposits that can displace and/or extend mill production at the Haile mine. Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Be a leader in safety & health, environmental, and community relations.
  • Work closely with the Exploration Director to develop and implement an effective exploration project generation strategy that results in the timely development of a project pipeline.
  • Identify and develop key geological, geophysical and geochemical targeting methods to drive project/target generation and new gold discoveries.
  • Collect, validate, organize, and assess datasets from geology, geochemistry, geophysics & drilling.
  • Establish and maintain a portfolio of quality projects.
  • Regularly review projects in field and office, ensuring that decision points are developed & maintained, and project deadlines & budgets are met.
  • Support annual budget preparation.
  • Write monthly progress, quarterly and press release reports with figures.
  • Prepare quarterly Exploration presentations for OGC stakeholders.
  • Review, support and mentor 2-3 geologists.
  • Direct drill hole planning and sequencing.
  • Review geology logs for accuracy and consistency.
  • Prepare and review biannual QAQC reports.
  • Construct 3D geologic models for structure, lithology and alteration.
  • Read, share and compile literature on gold deposits and regional geology.
  • Be familiar with epithermal exploration models.
  • Maintain GIS files of land parcels.
  • Recommend land for acquisition/lease and drop.
  • Collaborate with technical teams at Haile to evaluate resource risks and opportunities.
  • Participate in reconciliation reviews of resource vs block model performance.
  • Be a leader in safety & health, environmental, and community relations.

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • Bachelor of Science in Geology or closely related field.
  • 7-15 years of exploration experience.
  • Advanced degree preferred in Economic Geology or closely related field.
  • Registered or certified geologist through an accredited organization.
  • Proven discovery record and ability to advance projects through the pipeline.
  • Prefer experience in Carlin-type and/or epithermal gold systems.
  • Production geology experience >2 years desired.
  • Competent in ArcGIS, acQuire, ioGas, Vulcan and Leapfrog (or similar 3D software).
