Job Description

Imagine having a true work-life balance living in the stunning region of Otago. Due to an internal promotion, our Macraes exploration team are on the hunt for an Exploration Geologist. 

This is a drive in, drive out opportunity from nearby Dunedin or Oamaru, each with stunning landscapes, adventures and beaches to explore! For the more adventurous, Queenstown is just a 3 hour drive, offering endless amounts of exciting activities (skiing, hiking, water sports, fishing and more) to enjoy on your days off. 

This role will have you undertaking geological mapping, sampling, and systematic resource definition drilling within the Macraes Operation. 9-day fortnight roster, with a long weekend every fortnight!

Some of the key tasks and responsibilities:

  • Provide day-to-day supervision of percussion and diamond drilling programmes, including site preparation, operations, geological logging and sampling
  • On the basis of previous exploration results for an area or prospect, make recommendations on further effective exploration programs
  • Assist with the design, organise and implement diamond and RC percussion drilling programs
  • Undertake geological mapping, geochemical sampling, trenching and other fieldwork as required
  • pXRF testing of samples along the Macraes line of strike
  • Supervise exploration field personnel and allocate day-to-day duties and responsibilities
  • Responsibility for Exploration Health, Safety and Environment
  • Monitor QA/QC of day-to-day drill samples and deliver quality samples to analytical lab
  • Assist, relieve and train field personnel as required.
  • Assist in the day-to-day reporting of field personnel and contractors

Qualifications

  • A degree in Geology is essential
  • Full and current Driver Licence, ability to drive manual vehicles is essential
  • First Aid Certificate is ideal
  • An Honours or postgraduate qualification would be highly regarded.

 

Experience:     

  • 2 years post graduate minerals industry experience with exposure to RC percussion, diamond drilling operations and geological mapping preferred
  • Experience with AcQuire and 3D mining software such as Minesight, Micromine, Leapfrog or Deswik software is an advantage
  • Exposure to both open pit and underground mining operations would be an advantage
  • Effective decision-making skills
  • A high degree of computer literacy is required
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines while maintaining quality is essential
  • The ability to work within a practical, production orientated environment
  • Exhibit sound evaluative and analytical skills.
