Are you a talented and ambitious university student studying Communications, Public Relations or a Social Sciences related field and you're looking to gain practical experience in your field of study? We have the perfect opportunity for you to join our External Affairs and Social Performance team at OceanaGold Waihi operation.
This paid internship opportunity will run approximately from mid to late November through to mid-February (dependent on exam timetable of the successful applicant).
What will you, be doing?
- Gaining practical experience in your chosen field of study by working on diverse projects assigned by department managers and team members.
- Participating in various group activities and projects with other Interns, providing you with a well-rounded knowledge of the mining process.
- Presenting your experiences and key learnings to the Site Management Team at the conclusion of the internship, showcasing your growth and achievements.
Specific project work will involve:
- Creating content for internal and external audiences including e-newsletter production, event assistance and other supporting communications elements focused on demonstrating the benefits of mining at Waihi.
- Educating the public outside of Waihi in regard to mining methods used and the benefits and opportunities of mining.
- Prepare and deliver progress reports in relation to the proposed Waihi North Project.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Gaining experience and understanding of social license for Waihi mining operations.

What do I need, to join the Intern program?
- In your mid 2nd or final year of study (Communications, Public Relations or a Social Sciences fields).
- Have accommodation options at Waihi or surrounding areas.
- Current & strong academic performance and a passion for your chosen field.
- Effective communication, interpersonal and teamwork skills.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
- Full Drivers License and the ability to drive a manual vehicle preferred.
- Availability to participate from mid-late November, through to mid-February (2025-2026).
- Based at our Waihi Operation, one of New Zealand’s largest gold mines.
- Work on “real-life” projects, related to your field of study.
