External Customers: Contractors, Supply Chain, Vendors
Role Summary
The Water Treatment Plant Maintenance Supervisor is responsible for leading the mechanical and electrical maintenance team to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operation of water treatment assets. This role combines frontline leadership, schedule execution, technical oversight, and continuous improvement to deliver high-quality maintenance outcomes.
The supervisor ensures that work is executed in alignment with planned schedules, safety standards, and operational priorities. They play a key role in supporting planning processes, validating job scopes, and driving field execution excellence. This position requires strong leadership, technical knowledge, and the ability to coordinate across disciplines and departments.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and supervise a team of water treatment plant mechanical technicians and electrical technicians.
- Ensure compliance with health, safety, and environmental standards and promote safety leadership in the field.
- Execute planned maintenance schedules and respond to unplanned work efficiently.
- Provide technical input to the Maintenance Planner to support accurate job scoping and scheduling.
- Validate work packages and ensure readiness of labor, materials, permits, and equipment.
- Monitor daily and weekly work progress, identify delays, and implement corrective actions.
- Support continuous improvement by analyzing repetitive failures and recommending changes to materials, methods, or PM strategies.
- Ensure accurate documentation of repair history and feedback in the CMMS (ProntoXi).
- Supervise contractors and recommend contractor needs based on workload and scope.
- Participate in planning and scheduling meetings to align execution with maintenance strategy.
- Support shutdown and turnaround execution with leadership and coordination.
- Maintain vacation schedules, approve overtime, and conduct performance evaluations.
- Promote teamwork, accountability, and a culture of proactive maintenance.
- Develop and mentor technicians through the site-specific technical progression program, ensuring skill development aligns with operational needs.
- Respond to call-ins and urgent maintenance needs, ensuring timely escalation and resolution of critical issues.
- Follow escalation protocols for equipment failures, safety incidents, or resource constraints, ensuring appropriate communication and action.
- Log and investigate safety and environmental incidents, implement corrective actions, and ensure compliance with site reporting requirements.
- Reinforce field discipline and planning standards through visible leadership and engagement.
Key Qualifications
- Minimum 5 years of experience in industrial maintenance, with supervisory experience preferred.
- Trade certification in mechanical or electrical discipline preferred; dual-discipline experience is an asset.
- Strong understanding of water treatment systems, pumps, valves, instrumentation, and control systems.
- Proven leadership skills with ability to coach, mentor, and develop technicians.
- Experience with CMMS platforms (ProntoXi preferred); familiarity with SAP, Maximo, or Oracle is beneficial.
- Ability to interpret technical drawings and troubleshoot complex equipment issues.
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
- Commitment to safety, reliability, and continuous improvement.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
- Downtime Hours – Total equipment downtime attributed to maintenance.
- Schedule Compliance – % of work completed as per weekly schedule.
- PM Completion Rate – % of preventive maintenance tasks completed on time.
- Work Quality – % of rework or repeat failures due to execution issues.
- Team Productivity – Work orders completed per technician per week.
- Field Leadership Presence – Time spent in field supporting execution and validating work.
- Safety Compliance – % of jobs executed with required permits and safety documentation.
- CMMS Accuracy – % of work orders with complete and accurate history entered.
- Progression Development – % of technicians advancing through progression levels annually.
- Incident Response Time – Average time to respond and escalate critical maintenance or safety events.
- Environmental Compliance – % of environmental incidents logged and closed with corrective actions.
