Waihi

Why Waihi?

OceanaGold Corporation is a gold and copper producer with over 30 years of operating sustainably in New Zealand. Waihi Operation is centred around a successful underground mine and has long been a leading producer of gold and silver, supporting regional economies, contributing to New Zealand’s exports, and driving innovation in mining technology and practices. It has deep roots in New Zealand’s gold mining history.

That legacy creates a sense of pride and continuity for locals with many families have lived there for generations, and that history ties people to the land. Sustainability is fundamental to the way we do business. We are committed to mining responsibly, managing our effects, and more broadly, contributing to our host communities.

In addition to the current Martha Underground Mine, OceanaGold is also proposing to extend the life of mining in Waihi through the development of two exciting new projects: The Waihi North Project and The Martha Open Pit Project. The Martha Mine is one of the most well-known parts of the Waihi Gold Mine, and it has been one of the most significant gold mines in the country.

These proposed projects have the potential to play a meaningful role in supporting the regional economy in the coming years, providing economic benefits and job security.

OceanaGold’s Waihi Operation is located in the Bay of Plenty, within the small, historic gold mining town of Waihi. With a population of ~5,000, it offers a relaxed lifestyle, just 60 minutes from Tauranga and two hours from Auckland.

Waihi is close to Karangahake Gorge for hiking, forests for hunting, and Waihi Beach, one of New Zealand’s safest surf spots. The Coromandel Peninsula’s more challenging surf destinations, like Whangamata and Opoutere, are also nearby.

Tight-Knit Community Feel

Waihi is a relatively small town in the North Island of New Zealand, so there’s a strong community vibe. People tend to know each other, and there’s a sense of shared identity and support that makes it feel like home.

OceanaGold’s Contribution to Waihi

OceanaGold Waihi is committed to responsible mining, managing the impacts of its activities and, more broadly, contributing positively to Waihi. OceanaGold regards its activities as an opportunity to be a good neighbour, build a positive and lasting legacy, and deliver value during and beyond the life of the mine.

OceanaGold Waihi makes significant and long-term national, regional and local economic contributions through:

  • Direct and indirect contribution of mining operations and exploration projects, for example creation of jobs and purchase of goods and services from local and national providers;

  • Payment of taxes, licence and approval fees and royalties to government agencies; and

  • The Operation’s established community and social investment programmes

A specific example is OceanaGold Waihi’s contribution to local schools. Each year OceanaGold, through the Waihi Gold Mine Education Trust, funds nine scholarships for Waihi College students; five for students who intend to study at a tertiary institution, and a further four for students entering into the trades. Further to this, OceanaGold's Education Officer, with support from the site’s People and Culture Team, oversees a range of initiatives aimed at providing upskilling opportunities for the rangatahi (young people) of Waihi College and the broader Waihi community. These initiatives are funded and implemented by the company as part of its ongoing commitment to local development and community engagement.

Among these initiatives is the company’s JumpStart Drivers Licensing programme, which was launched in 2022. Since its inception, the programme has helped over 100 College students and community members obtain their restricted driver’s licenses, enhancing their mobility and job prospects.
