The position is based at our Macraes mine, which is New Zealand’s largest active gold mine set in the heart of the picturesque rural Otago landscape. The operation consists of a large-scale surface mine, an underground mine, and an adjacent process plant inclusive of an autoclave for pressure oxidation of the ore. Macraes has produced over five million ounces of gold since 1990, with production split approximately 75% from open pit and 25% from underground. The Macraes Operation is committed to contributing to the local economy through employment, procurement, community investment and donations – with over 600 people employed between the Macraes Operation and the Dunedin Office.
We require a qualified engineering geologist to join our geotechnical team at Macraes, working with geologists, mine planners, surveyors and operational staff to manage the safety and stability of our open pit excavations, waste rock stacks and tailings storage facilities.
The open pit engineering geologist will be responsible for geotechnical data collection, monitoring, analysis and interpretation. Using this data, along with your experience and judgement, you will provide relevant and timely advice on geotechnical hazards. Contributing to the implementation and maintenance of effective geotechnical risk controls and management for a safe and productive mining operation.
- Undertake routine geotechnical data collection activities such as drill core logging, face mapping, test pits, borehole, prism and seepage monitoring, etc.
- Maintain geotechnical databases, including accurate data entry, quality control and security
- Install, maintain, and monitor specialist geotechnical equipment including slope radar, prism network monitoring, GNSS, piezometers, extensometers, inclinometers, LiDAR, and photogrammetry equipment.
- Assist coordination of and execution of geotechnical and hydrogeological investigation and monitoring programs
- Undertake routine regular inspection of pit walls, excavations, blast performance, waste rock stacks and other infrastructure
- Interpret and analyse geotechnical data including trend identification and analysis
- Provide geotechnical expertise to operational risk assessments
- When rostered on-call as the duty Geotechnical Officer, provide immediate after-hours response to geotechnical alarms and urgent operational safety or production issues
- Potential opportunities for secondment into underground mining operations and/or project/planning work
- Relevant tertiary qualification in either Geomechanics, Geotechnical Engineering, Geology or Engineering Geology.
- Full and Current Driver Licence, ability to drive manual vehicles is preferred.
Ideal experience
- 2 to 5 years’ relevant experience.
- Excellent computer skills with proven ability working with reports, presentations, spreadsheets, and databases.
- Ability to independently manage and prioritise work to ensure timely and accurate geotechnical advice is provided when required, with a focus on effective management of safety and mine production risks.
- Good observational skills, with the ability to interpret complex data, identify trends, and to act decisively on observations and clearly communicate important information in a timely manner.
- Practical approach to problem solving, maintaining, and repairing equipment.
- Good level of fitness with the ability to navigate and conduct fieldwork in challenging terrain and weather conditions.
- Proven ability for open critical thinking, continuous learning, and improvement.
Beneficial to have:
- Experience within both open pit and underground mining operations
- Competency and proven experience with: LEAPFROG, DESWIK, MICROMINE, VULCAN, MINESIGHT and ACQUIRE
- Experience with geotechnical software such as DIPS, ROCSLOPE and UNWEDGE.
