The Senior Engineer - Geotechnical (Underground) provides Geotechnical Engineering advice and guidance to site in order to optimise mine plans and ensure stability of both open pit and underground mining operations.
The Principal Geotechnical Engineer will provide proactive geotechnical support to all facets of site operations through the effective management of geotechnical risks. This will be achieved through strong and effective leadership of the site Geotechnical Department.
Key Tasks and Responsibilities
- Oversee the assessment and optimisation of mine designs to ensure any potential geotechnical risks are managed
- Ensure the ground control management plans are reviewed and updated and the requirements are actioned in a timely manner.
- Manage and provide direct input into interactions between UG, historical workings, existing pit and proposed pit cutbacks.
- Ensure that suitable ground and slope performance monitoring systems including monitoring databases are established, maintained, reviewed and the data interpreted in a timely manner.
- Establish, implement and document standards, systems and procedures for an integrated whole mine geotechnical model comprising: structural, geomechanical, lithological, rock mass properties, rock mass behaviour, and mine layout models.
- Ensure data analysis and slope design modelling is carried out in line with current geotechnical industry best practice.
- Design and manage the implementation and placement of consolidated fill into old historic workings to ensure adequate factors of safety for varying exposures
- Management of internal and external review process which include internal stakeholders, external consultants and peer review / local government bodies.
- +7 years experience in a senior role and a minimum 10 years overall experience within both open pit, underground and exposure to tailings facilities.
- Experience in working with external regulators and peer reviewers.
- Proven experience of effectively leading a team.
- High level of competency in the use of relevant geotechnical software including, but not limited to, SLIDE, UNWEDGE, SWEDGE, DIPS, RS2, MAP3D,
- Ability to critically review externally generated sophisticated modelling results i.e. non-linear numerical modelling packages such as FLAQ3D and Abaqus.
- Relevant tertiary qualification (Geomechanics/Geotechnical Engineering, Geology) ideally with a post graduate qualification.
- Full and Current Driver Licence, ability to drive manual vehicles is essential.
