Senior Geologist – Greenfields Exploration

Seeking a suitably qualified and reliable Senior Geologist – Greenfields Exploration (Fixed Term) You will play a leading role in the generation and management of gold and copper exploration projects in the Philippines to deliver discoveries aligned with OceanaGold’s growth strategy.  Maintain a watching brief on and regularly report competitor activity within country. Maintain a comprehensive project database and network of contacts within the gold sector, government and non-government organisations. The role will report to the Manager – Exploration.

Key tasks and responsibilities:

• Undertake the timely identification, evaluation, promotion and delivery of new business and exploration opportunities in the Philippines in line with, and in order to meet, strategic growth objectives.
• Provide periodic and timely reports to the Exploration Manager - Philippines outlining progress towards achieving objectives.
• Work with the Exploration Manager - Philippines to develop and implement effective project generation strategies for the Asia-Pacific region and recommend acquisition opportunities.
• Maintain an informed opinion and up-to-date understanding of gold exploration and mining projects within the Philippines through the development and maintenance of a regional database including geological, project and country risk information to support the evaluation of opportunities;
• Monitor activity of competitors and identify business threats or opportunities that may exist as a result of these activities;
• Comply with all safety requirements and observes all company policies and procedures;
• Carry out all other duties that may reasonably be required.    

Qualifications:   

• Behaviour consistent with OceanaGold Values and the OceanaGold Way
• Requires BS in economic Geology.
• PRC licence in good standing
• Postgraduate qualifications highly regarded.

Experience:

• Minimum of 15 years postgraduate experience in the mining industry.
• Sound team leadership and management skills.
• Experience in gold and copper-gold exploration required with significant experience in porphyry copper-gold and epithermal gold mineralisation.
• Exposure to a variety of commodity types, exploration techniques, mining methods, and operational environments.
• Experience with application and interpretation of geological, geochemical, geophysical, and drilling exploration techniques.
• Experience in project generation and exploration across regions.
• Capable of compiling and analysing large data packages
• Capable and competent use of GIS software
• Understanding of resource estimation methodology and geostatistics.
• Sampling methodology and theory.
• Preparation of budgets and forecasts.
• Project management.

Skills/Attributes:      

• A passion for making discoveries and demonstrated experience in planning and leading exploration teams to successfully execute exploration programs.
• Previous experience in project generation, ideally for epithermal gold and porphyry copper-gold mineralisation styles.
• Advanced knowledge of epithermal and porphyry mineral deposits and models, and exploration methods used to evaluate and discover these.
• Strong technical geology skills.
• Good knowledge of key Philippine geological terrains and mineral districts.
• Good knowledge of ‘regulatory requirements’ for operating in the Philippines (can elaborate on this point).
• Collaborative, innovative, problem-solver capable of communicating and presenting concepts in simple language to a wide audience.
• Computer literacy – ArcGIS, Micromine and Leapfrog competence highly regarded.
• Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
• Exhibit sound evaluative and analytical skills.
• Work well both independently and as part of a team.
• Possess a high degree of safety awareness.
• Flexible and professional approach to duties.
