Macraes

Macraes

Since 1990, OceanaGold has produced over five million ounces of gold from a hard-rock, low-grade gold deposit at Macraes in East Otago, an area with a rich gold mining and cultural history.

A true New Zealand success story, Macraes’ gold has been manufactured into a range of products including electronics, wealth and financial exchange, jewellery and medals, and is even used in space exploration, medicine, and dentistry.

Macraes is also one of the leading contributors to Otago’s economy through employment, procurement, community investment and donations - with over 600 people currently employed between the Macraes Mine and Dunedin Office.

Macraes Mine is comprised of several open pit mines and the Golden Point Underground Mine, where crews mine ore as low as 200m below sea level. The diversity of the landscape we mine makes our work challenging and full of opportunities to upskill and learn on the job.

Many of our workers have been with Macraes for decades and have limitless and vital knowledge of our industry, mine, and the community we work in. Alongside these experienced Macraes people, we welcome workers from all corners of the world, bringing with them fresh ideas and skills.

We are continually evolving with our industry and are frequently the first mine in the country to adopt new technologies to make our work safer, more efficient, and better for the environment. Last year, we became the first New Zealand mine to use an electric shovel. This year, we were the first to use x-ray technology to analyse gold content in ore samples.

Throughout the mining cycle and closure period, with the guidance of our dedicated Environmental team, we are responsible for monitoring our impacts on the surrounding environment and making sure we’re meeting the required conditions in a responsible manner. Macraes Mine is in the Waitaki Whitestone Global UNESCO Geopark, the only UNESCO geopark in Oceania. This means our workers not only work in a fascinating landscape, but they’re also able to enjoy their down time in one of the world’s most geologically unique and beautiful environments.

Many of New Zealand’s biggest tourism drawcards are driving distance from Macraes, including:

  • Dunedin (1 hour)
  • Wanaka (2.5 hours)
  • Ski fields (multiple locations under 3 hours)
  • Twizel and Lake Tekapo (2.5-3 hours)
  • Queenstown and Arrowtown (3 hours)
  • The Catlins Forest Park (3 hours)

The pioneering spirit of Macraes’ early gold miners in the 1800s continues today, with our mine able to operate successfully through various global economic cycles and challenges. In 2025, we’re preparing for the next phase of Macraes – a series of activities across site that will extend our life of mine to the 2030s.
